ABOUT MARY MACKILLOP What is Mary MacKillop Place? Mary MacKillop Place and, in particular, the tomb of Blessed Mary MacKillop in the Memorial Chapel are places of pilgrimage. Mary MacKillop Place provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience, understand and appreciate the life and times of this great Australian woman who was truly ahead of her time. Mary MacKillop Place also offers accommodation and conference facilities. Who are the Sisters of Saint Joseph? The Sisters of St Joseph (Josephites) are members of the religious congregation founded in Australia by Blessed Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods in the 1860s. The Vision of the Sisters at this time is to recapture the radical response of Mary MacKillop and her companions to the ‘misery and wretchedness’ of our time, remembering that central to our identity is our service to people who are without real choices, excluded or destitute in some way. How do I make a petition to Mary MacKillop? There are facilities available onsite at Mary MacKillop Place for special prayer requests to be placed at the tomb of Blessed Mary MacKillop. These petitions will be included in the Mary MacKillop Feast Day Novena, which concludes on August 8th 2008. There is a Pastoral Care Department at Mary MacKillop Place, so there are always Sisters of St Joseph available to listen and provide support to pilgrims and visitors. If you would like a prayer request or thanksgiving placed in the Petition Box at the foot of Blessed Mary's tomb. Campaign for Canonisation. The Catholic Church bestows the title BLESSED on a person whose life has been proved to be extraordinarily holy. This permits the people to publicly honour the person BEATIFIED and to use a special Eucharistic liturgy and liturgical prayer. The public veneration is usually limited to a diocese, region or nation. In the case of Mary MacKillop it means that all Australians may publicly honour her. Beatification is not an infallible statement but it does assure a moral certainty that the person has lived a life of heroic virtue. Mary MacKillop was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 19th January 1995. Since then the number of favours received through her intercession has continued to grow, as has international interest and speculation towards the timing of her canonisation. We ask your prayers that when the time is right for the Josephites, Australia and the Church, Blessed Mary MacKillop will be recognized as a saint for the Universal Church. To be part of the Campaign for Mary's Canonisation, please add your details to our petition below and create history with the Sisters of Saint Joseph in making Mary MacKillop Australia's first internationally recognised Saint.
